<div itemprop="description">DONALD DOUGLAS HICKSON <br />June 7, 1921 &ndash; February 26, 2016 <br />Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me (Psalm 23) <br /> <br />Don passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at Hastings Manor, Belleville after an incredible life, well lived. <br />Don was born June 7, 1921 in Wheatley, Ontario on the family farm to Webster and Ivy (nee LaMarsh). Don enlisted in the RCAF in 1940. Married to Alice Annie Wharram on April 12, 1941 in Wheatley. Don was assigned to RAF 203 Squadron in Egypt where he flew reconnaisance as navigator / observer over the Mediterranean. In October 1942 his Maryland ditched near Crete. The crew was rescued the next day by a German flying boat. Don spent three months in hospital before being transferred to POW camp. He escaped from the Germans during the infamous &ldquo;Black March&rdquo; in April 1945 and returned to Canada. <br /> <br />Don started a long, illustrious career in Accounting and worked for Heinz in Leamington, John Wyeth in Windsor, Mead Johnson &ndash; Vice President Finance in Belleville and Toronto and Yardley of London &ndash; Vice President Finance in Toronto. After retiring, Don successfully ran his own accounting business for many years. Don was very active for over 40 years in the Belleville Kiwanis and Probus Clubs, Scouting (Rover leader) and Eastminster United Church. In his spare time Don was an avid boater and served as Commander of the Bay of Quinte Canadian Power Squadron. Don&rsquo;s second passion was building and he built / renovated several houses, cottages, garages, boats and boat houses over the years. Wood carving was another interest and the family has numerous, beautiful animal carvings given to them by Don. The family share many fond memories of camping trips on Lake Opeongo, boating on the Bay of Quinte and cruises on the Trent Canal, the Rideau Canal and the Thousand Islands. In their retirement years, Don and Alice travelled throughout eastern Canada and the US in their motor home. <br /> <br />Don and Alice are survived by their children Carol Peterson, Bill (Eleanor) and Bob (Cathy). Grandchildren Zsusana (Carol), Matthew, Jillian (Bill), Christopher and Jeffrey (Bob). Great grandchildren Kaiti, Sarah (Zsusana &amp; Bill) Thomas, Charlotte, Sophia Rose (Matthew &amp; Robin), Kaleb (Jillian &amp; Scott). <br /> <br />Don was predeased by his wife Alice of 64 years, his older sister Marjorie Ella McKinney (2005) and his younger brother Joe Lamarsh Hickson (2015). <br />Survived by sisters in law Joyce Hickson (Wheatley), Hazel Belyea (Port Colbourne) and Dorothy Wharram (Etobicoke). <br /> <br />Family and close friends are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Burke Funeral Home, 150 Church St, Belleville on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 1 p.m. Visitation will be held from 12 Noon to 1 p.m. If desired, memorial donations to the Canadian Red Cross.
