<div itemprop="description">P.H. (Phil) Etter July 24, 1924 to August 6, 2016 <br> <br> <br>Philip passed away peacefully at Belleville General Hospital on August 6th at the age of 92. He was the son of Edith (Kilcup) Etter and Algernon Etter. Philip was predeceased by his sister Connie Repath of Toronto. Philip and his wife Phyllis were soon to celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary. Philip will be remembered fondly by his entire family, Phyllis, his children Pamela Rose and husband Allan of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, and Carolyn Ketcheson and husband Dr. Ian Sutherland of Belleville, and by his cherished grandchildren, Joseph Pallant (Marcy) of Vancouver, Jessie Ketcheson (Nathan) of Kingston, Aaron Ketcheson (Emily) of Guelph, Leah Ketcheson (Mike) of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Gabriel Rose (Emily) of Vancouver, 6 great-grandchildren and the nieces and nephews of the Repath and Ross families. <br> <br>Phil spent the first half of his life in Halifax. During WW2 he served as the Assistant Purser aboard a hospital ship, the Lady Nelson. Following the war, Phil worked for Imperial Oil in Halifax where he met Phyllis and married in 1947. Phil completed a number of professional designations and became President and Fellow of the Credit Association of Canada and Director of the International Credit Association. In addition to his professional activities and involvements, Phil was active in the Masonic Lodge, serving as Master and Past Master of Cornwallis Lodge #95. <br> <br>In 1967, Phil and family moved to Toronto where he continued to work for Imperial Oil as Senior Credit Advisor until his retirement in 1982. During this time Phil served as Director of the Eastern Region of the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association and was an appointed representative to the National Council of Veteran Associations. <br> <br>In 1996 Phil and Phyllis moved to Belleville where they became involved in the local community. Phil held a variety of voluntary roles as President of Kiwanis Sagonaska, Program Chair for Probus, and auditor at St. Thomas’ Church. He also took an active role in the federally-sponsored Memory Project which offered local students an opportunity to have face to face contact with veterans. His hard work and voluntary involvements were recognized when he was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. <br> <br>Phil will be remembered for his lively spirit, his sociability, intelligence and wit, all of which were evident to the end. He had a love of language and literature which inspired him to commit to memory an impressive number of poems and passages of prose. He had an appreciation of history, an ear for music, and a respect for the unique personal histories of his fellow travellers through life. <br> <br>Phil’s family is very grateful for the many kindnesses of friends and acquaintances and for the special care offered by the staff at Quinte Gardens and the Belmont Long Term Care Facility. <br> <br>Visitation will be held at the Burke Funeral Home (613-968-6968) 150 Church Street, Belleville, on Friday, August 12th from 7 to 9 PM. A memorial service in honour of Philip’s life will be held at St. Thomas' Church on Saturday, August 13th at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to St. Thomas’ Church, the Sea Cadets of Canada (Quinte Corps) or the Learning Foundation of the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board.
